We make two glaze styles of pottery today.%20(2).jpg)
Our first style is salt-glazed stoneware, which refers to the process by which the glaze is applied to the pots by throwing salt into the kiln when it reaches its maximum temperature of 2,400 degrees Fahrenheit. The finished pots have a grey or tan clay body with a cobalt blue decoration. Red Wing's first potters produced only salt-glaze pots in the late 1800s, and are the most valued by red wing pottery collectors. The second style of pottery is our Bristol glaze ware. This is a more uniform smooth glaze and replicates the pots made in Red Wing in the early 1900s.
Because of our salt glaze firing process each of our pots are unique in their glaze color, ranging from gray to tan to brown, and in various flashing marks from their proximity to the salt ports. Therefore, we prefer our customers to hand select their salt glaze pots in our retail store. We only make approximately 400 pots a month and they are collectible. The only salt glaze pot that we currently make available for purchase on line is our personalized jar. We do custom orders for groups. If you are planning a family reunion, a business meeting, or a church centennial please call to inquire on having a special pottery piece made for your group. We also do church communion sets: chalices/goblets and wafer/bread holders.
